Bathroom Remodeling Idea
How to get inspiration and plan your bathroom remodeling ideaSo you have decided that you are going to remodel your bathroom. Now what?
You know that you want to change the room but you don't have much idea about what it is that you want yet. All the sales brochures you've looked at and all the showrooms you've visited have only made you more confused than you were to start with. So what do you do next?
Get to know the room you are going to remodel
This is important. You must measure all the dimensions in your bathroom and write them down in a way that you can understand. The best way to do this is to first make a scale drawing of the floor plan. Choose a suitable scale that will allow you to draw the floor accurately on one piece of paper. If your bathroom is 16 feet by 10 feet then a scale of 2 foot to the inch should allow you to do this. You will need a piece of paper at least 8 inches by 5 inches.
If you have some squared paper then you will find it much easier to draw out your bathroom remodeling idea. If not then use a ruler and try to keep things square on the page.
You're drawing should be as accurate as possible making sure that you capture any pipe work or other odd shapes that might affect the placement of bathroom furniture.
When you have done the floor plan then you should do the same with each of the walls. You need to accurately draw the shape and size of the wall and the size and placement of any windows etc. You should also note down the depth of windows too.
Go and view real bathrooms in real homes
When you think that you have a feel for the size and shape of your bathroom you can start thinking about what you want it to look like but don't forgetting that it also has to be functional. The best way to do this is to go and look carefully at bathrooms that are in use already. Use your friends and neighbours in the first instance. Pay them a visit and ask if they would mind you taking a look. This activity can be particularly productive when they have a relatively newly remodeled bathroom because they will be only too pleased to let you see it and talk to you about it. This way you can learn from their efforts.
You can also get bathroom remodeling ideas by viewing houses for sale. Ask your real estate agent to show you properties with nice bathrooms. Don't be put off doing this by the fact that you don't intend to buy because who knows, you might decide that it's easier to move than remodel your own bathroom. It has happened; especially if you have ever done this before and know how much work you are letting yourself in for.
While you are viewing bathrooms make sure that you write notes about the things you see that you like and where you see them. If you don't make notes then you will find it very confusing after viewing more than two or three different bathrooms at different locations.
Take a digital camera with you wherever you go
If you don't have one already then you should invest in a digital camera. It doesn't have to be expensive and you should choose one that's small enough to take with you everywhere you go.
Don't forget to use your camera to record everything that you might want to remember later. Take pictures of bathrooms from all angles and close ups of any features, fixtures, accessories and items of interest. Make a note of what you are snapping so that you will be able to remember where you where and what you saw.
After each viewing transfer all the images you took to your computer and organise them into folders that make sense to you. I will generally make up a folder name that describes what the images are about and the date that I took the photos. Something like this: "/images/23-arcacia-avenue-060706/" This will allow you to find things easily later
Don't forget to imagine the lighting and visualise yourself using the room
The room has to look nice and be functional so it's important that you take the time when viewing a bathroom, to imagine yourself doing things in the room. Don't be afraid to try things out. Sit on the toilet; walk into the shower cubicle etc. Close your eyes for a moment and visualise the room with different lighting.
Look at the floor covering too
You will need to get ideas for the floor covering while you are looking around. Make a note of what works and what doesn't. Most people seem to end up with some type of vinyl covering because it's cheap and very practical but it's very difficult to fit it in a small bathroom, even for the experts. You might want to consider using vinyl tile for the bathroom. It's just as good as the sheet vinyl and because it comes in individual squares it's a lot easier to fit.
Draw up a proposed layout using the scale drawing - cut out shapes
Now that you have an idea of the kind of bathroom you want to create you can go to the showrooms and find units to your liking. Don't purchase them yet because you need to make sure that they will fit into your bathroom. Make notes of all the dimensions of everything you are interested in then go home and cut out shapes of paper to represent the items you want to use. The cutouts should be to the same scale as the floor plan that you drew up before you started looking for bathroom remodeling ideas.
Now take your cut out pieces of paper and place them onto your scale drawing of the room. The object of this exercise is to make everything fit in a way that you will be comfortable with. You might have to get a little creative with this and the activity could take several hours before you get it right.
When you have managed to fit all of your items onto your scale drawing in positions that you feel comfortable with, you are ready to start looking for contractors to do the work, assuming that you're not going to do it yourself that is.
